Shooting & Assisting a Wedding

I had a good time this last Saturday assisting Portland, OR freelance photographer Craig Mitchelldyer (http://craigmitchelldyer.com) on one of his wedding day shoots.

The experience of shooting a wedding was exhilarating, tiring, interesting, unique, and all together never boring.

At any rate, check out a few of the photos I made:

Recent Work from May

Here is some of my recent work from the month of May. I have been shooting a lot of unusual assignments this month, from men's fashion portraits to a story on a circus performance class, to wild art around town. Somewhere in the middle I also got to photograph former Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay James Yee, who spoke at SCC.

4th Annual ASL Bowl

I photographed the 4th annual American Sign Language Bowl at Shoreline Community College today.

Four area high schools competed for points in categories ranging from Instructions to Translation. This was certainly a sensitive assignment for me as many of the students and organizers were non-hearing, making communication difficult.

It was interesting though to try and look for moments when no words were spoken for the duration of the competition.

P.S. Apparently, 'Jazz hands' is how you sign applause.

Annual Univ. Washington Spring Scrimmage

I had a good time shooting the UW Huskies Annual Purple-Gold scrimmage for ICON SMI today. It was both my first time shooting for ICON and my first time covering NCAA football.

The last time I was at Husky Stadium was in 2005 when I assisted the legendary photographer Robert Seale, then of The Sporting News. To be there today shooting for myself felt pretty cool.

Anyway, a few pictures...

Quarterback Jake Locker jumps in the air to catch a fake hike, which he then sent sailing for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

Husky gold wide receiver Tony Chidiac (#28) gets bungled up with a purple defense on an incomplete pass late in the 4th quarter.

Quarterback Jake Locker gets roughed up early in the 2nd quarter.

Husky purple team member (#11) runs for a small gain in the 3rd quarter.

Husky head coach Tyrone Willingham observes 1st quarter action in the spring scrimmage game.

Purple team tailback Brandon Yakoboski (#35) is brought down by a member of the gold team.

Purple team tightend Chris Izbicki (#4) finds an opening early in the 2nd quarter.

Purple team cornerback Matt Mosley (#19) declares an endzone reception safe, moments before officials did the same, in the 2nd quarter.

Gold team defensive tackle Jovon O' Connor (#55) takes a breather after winning their game against the purple team, as gold team tightend Johnie Kirton (#37) looks on.

A fan looks a little dejected during half time of the annual purple-gold Husky spring scrimmage.

Comments always welcome.

Waiting for the Dalai Lama Pt. 1

I am down on the field at Qwest Field, sitting on the media podium, waiting until the 1:00pm (or is it 1:30pm?) start to the Dalai Lama Heartbeats for Humanity event. The Dalai Lama is expected to arrive around this time, and right now I am just glad that I found wireless internet access.

Anyway, here are a few pictures that I have been able to make so far, mostly security, empty podiums, and lots of harsh shadows.

Another thing I am glad for, the talented Rod Mar of the Seattle Times letting me know I really could be at the 35 yd press podium and not the 50 yd media podium (stage is in the endzone) as security initially directed me.

P.S., It is way too hot out. My black Nikons are beginning to sear my skin :)

I felt like Deep Throat when my media credential packet instructed me to enter through the 6th Floor Parking Garage. Here is a view across the parking lot to the media entrance. Gotta love the bright blue skies of Spring.

Some event volunteers find themselves in some neat light, deep within the interior of Qwest Field.

A young girl that will be performing with an 1800-member choir looks around as she takes the stage, prior to the start of the Heartbeats for Humanity event.

My next update should be with actual pictures of the event. BTW, who knew that a MBP could throw so much light into your eyes, when trying to look at pictures.

Sports Shooter Academy Photos

Monday March 10, 2008

There is so much I could say about my experiences at Sports Shooter Academy V, but the biggest thing I am taking away from all this is what works for a picture and what does not. Having access each day to some really terrific photographer's eye in critiquing the daily selects made growing possible. It was great too to see my fellow SSA participants grow too in such a short amount of time.

I think what really makes the workshop work is the number of different events you can shoot, and bring your personal eye and style to. It was not necessary to shoot telephoto necessarily for every event, nor wide for others. I loved the variety each day and it made for a wonderful week. Also, competing with 50 other photographers to make pictures that impressed faculty, or found a different angle, or showcased a unique moment -- was a real challenge and part of the fun of the Academy.

Getting to know all these different photographers was really fun too -- so many great war stories and hilarious nights. I will remember these good times guys.

To win Best Picture Saturday, Best Single Picture, and Best Student Portfolio is an incredible honor and an amazing feeling. Every day we were all trying so hard to make different and unique pictures and just to hear the faculty say "That's an almost" was a compliment its self. I am happy to win but just as happy to have been in the company of some really talented photographers this week.

If any student out there is considering a trip to a possible SSA VI, they should definitely attend -- you will grow as a photog, make some cool pictures, and have a great time -- if you put energy, enthusiasm, and creativity into the assignments.
